Sunset Hiking at Gili Lawa Darat- Komodo National Park
Komodo National Park is filled with so many treasures but hiking Gili Lawa Darat at sunset has to one of my favorites memories from my trip. As we slowly made our way up to the peak, the reef became more clear and the mountainside began to glow with the setting of the sun.
In the guide, I will inform you of everything you need to know about hiking Gili Lawa Darat, how to get there, and how to book a tour through Komodo National Park.
BOOKING A TOUR IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
Gili Lawa Darat is a small island located within Komodo National Park. All of the tours that go through Komodo National Park leave from Labuan Bajo. In order to arrive there, you will need to arrive via plane. There is a cargo ferry that heads to the island, however, this takes a VERY long time and they are not very often. I would highly recommend taking a plane.
In order to get anywhere in the Komodo Islands, you will need to book either a day tour or a liveaboard. There are several companies that offer day trips that go to a variety of the islands or you can book a liveaboard experience. I highly recommend a liveaboard as there is so much to see and do in the Komodo Islands and you don’t want to miss any of it!
Depending on your travel style you can either book a boat tour once you arrive in Labuan Bajo, or you can prebook your trip through a company such as LE PIRATE. Thomas and I booked our trip through LE PIRATE EXPLORER three months in advance as we knew for sure it was something we wanted to do in Indonesia. LE PIRATE is a trendy company that offers everything from beach cottages to liveaboards, that take you through the Komodo Islands. Check out the link for the current pricing and details of the trip.
HOW TO GET TO GILI LAWA DARAT IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
Once you have a tour booked in Komodo National Park, you are on your way to Gili Lawa Darat. Our tour with LE PIRATE headed there on our third day for sunset and it was absolutely stunning. Gili Lawa Darat is located just north of the island of Komodo.
I have attached a map below of the exact location of Gili Lawa Darat in Komodo National Park.
HIKING GILI LAWA DARAT AT SUNSET
Hiking Gili Lawa Darat at sunset is a must do if you are visiting Komodo National Park. There are two sunset spots that are very famous in the Komodo Islands, Gili Lawa, and Padar Island. However, Gili Lawa Darat remains my favorite as it is a lot less busy.
There are two hikes that you can do on Gili Lawa Darat, one medium hike that is for people that don’t particularly love hiking and a longer hike with a higher viewpoint. Our group went with the long hike and I am so glad we did! As we looked over to the smaller hike, the peak was flooded with people. Plus the view is always better from a higher vantage point. The hike was around 20 minutes, but that will really depend on how physically fit and determined you are.
Once you get to the top of the mountain you will see the most stunning panoramic views and a reef that wraps around all of the islands.
TIPS FOR HIKING GILI LAWAT DARAT
- Wear a pair of runners as the path is made up of loose gravel and is pretty slippery.
- Bring a lot of water, it is a short hike up but it is an absolute steamer, you won’t regret it.
- There is a second path that you can take on the way down. The steep path is pretty rough on the shins and knees on the way down.
- Keep your eyes out for deer! We saw the cutest little does on the hike down.
- If you plan on staying until dark, leave some battery on your phone so you have a light for the path on the way down.
I hope this inspires you to go hiking at Gili Lawa Darat in Komodo National Park! It truly is some of the most amazing viewpoints I have ever seen!
