Hiking with Deadly Komodo Dragons on Rinca Island
If you are looking for Komodo Dragons than you have come to the right place. Rinca Island in Komodo National Park is the number one place in Indonesia to see these magnificent creatures.
In this guide, I will show you how to get to Rinca Island, where to book a tour to see the Komodo Dragons, and what to expect once you do find them. Plus some images to inspire your travels.
HOW TO GET TO LABUAN BAJO
In order to see the Komodo Dragons on Rinca Island, you will first need to get to Labuan Bajo. Labuan Bajo is a small town located on the island of Flores. Labuan Bajo is where all of the liveaboards and day trips leave from.
In order to get to the island of Flores, you will need to fly into Labuan Bajo. If you are coming from Bali, the flight will run you around $100 USD round trip. I book all my flights through SKYSCANNER. I have never found better pricing elsewhere, I highly recommend them.
The flight was around 1 hour and had the most amazing views when we were landing! So be sure to bring have your camera ready.
I have attached a map below of the exact location of Rinca Island.
HOW TO BOOK A TOUR TO RINCA ISLAND IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
Now depending on your travel style, you can either book a tour in advance, or upon arrival. Thomas and I booked ours a few months in advance as it is quite a trendy company that fills up.
We booked our tour with LE PIRATE BEACH CLUB. They offer everything from cozy beach cottages to a boatel, as well as liveaboard experiences. Check out their website HERE for current pricing and availability. By the way, this was not sponsored in any way, I just really enjoyed my time with them.
If you aren’t interested in Le Pirate, there are a lot of really cool ships that sail through Komodo National Park to Rinca Island as well. You can book these in advance via BOOKING.COM or once you arrive. There are plenty of boats leaving every day so don’t worry if you’re not really a planner!
LIVEABOARD VS. DAY TRIP TO RINCA ISLAND
When booking a tour, you will have the option to go on just a one-day excursion, or a more in-depth tour for several nights. I really think that the liveaboards are a better experience. Check out my full list of why you should take a LIVEABOARD IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK.
HIKING WITH DEADLY KOMODO DRAGONS ON RINCA ISLAND
From the moment I stepped foot onto the dock at Rinca Island, I knew Thomas and I were in for an adventure. We were greeted with a sign acknowledging the presence of crocodiles in the water below us. As we crossed through the gate I was so filled with excitement I thought I might burst!
Rinca Island charges an entrance fee of 300,000 Rupiah per person. We also tipped our guide 100,000 Rupiah at the end as well. There is also a stand where you can purchase drinks and snacks, as well as souvenirs.
We were there for no longer than 5 minutes before we saw our first Komodo Dragon. During the day they lie quietly in the shade relaxing and saving their energy for the cooler hours of the day.
Our guide explained to us that the Komodo Dragons might only eat once or twice a month! They prey on the water buffalo, deer and monkeys that share the island with them. Their bite is also venomous so definitely keep your distance and stay with the group.
TIPS FOR HIKING WITH KOMODO DRAGONS ON RINCA ISLAND
- Bring a bottle of water, it is steaming hot.
- There are two treks to choose from a medium and hard. The medium is roughly an hour and is not really a hike at all.
- Bring some cash to tip your guide.
- Stay with your group.
- Wear runners or sandals with straps.
I hope you enjoyed this post and are excited to visit Komodo Dragons on Rinca Island!
