Padar Island Hike in Komodo National Park
Padar Island is the most beautiful sight within Komodo National Park. The island is lined with deep blue bays and jagged green peaks that light up as the sun begins to dip below the horizon.
In this guide, I will walk you through getting to Komodo National Park, how to book a tour to Padar Island, as well as what to expect once you arrive.
HOW TO GET TO KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
If you want to go to Padar Island, you will first need to get to Komodo National Park. Komodo National Park is located to the east of Bali. It is roughly an hour flight or there is a ferry like twice a month that probably takes a month. Just take the flight.
We bought our flight off of SKYSCANNER for roughly $100 round trip. The main airport in Flores is Labuan Bajo. This is where all trips through Komodo National Park leave from.
I highly recommend flying into Labuan Bajo a day before you want to do a tour and staying one day later. When traveling in SE Asia you can always expect flight delays, you wouldn’t want to miss your tour or your flight. Plus there is so much to see on Labuan Bajo, it is worth a day or two of exploring.
WHERE TO STAY IN LABUAN BAJO
If you do decide to stay in Labuan Bajo for a day or two, you are going to need a place to stay. I recommend checking out LE PIRATE, We booked our boat tour from them, and while we didn’t stay there, we highly recommend it over where we stayed (WORLD BNB). World BNB was nice and clean just a very inconvenient location.
Le Pirate Beach Club is located right in the main town of Labuan Bajo and has really good, reasonably priced food. We also had some really nice local soup just down the road for only 10,000 Rupiah.
BOOKING A TOUR IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
Depending on your travel style you can either book a boat tour once you arrive in Labuan Bajo, or you can prebook your trip through a company such as LE PIRATE.
Thomas and I booked our trip through Le Pirate Explorer three months in advance as we knew for sure it was something we wanted to do in Indonesia. LE PIRATE is a trendy company that offers everything from beach cottages to liveaboards, that take you through the Komodo Islands. Check out the link for the current pricing and details of the trip. If going out with Le Pirate is something that interests you, I recommend booking in advance as everyone we spoke with booked months in advance. Thomas and I did the four days three-night excursion on the Explorer 1.
If you are a last minute kind of person, fear not, as there are SO many boats leaving every day, you will have no problem booking a tour.
HIKING PADAR ISLAND IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
Padar Island has got to be the most famous spot in Komodo National Park. Whether you do a day trip or a liveaboard, this is one of the spots they will take you. You can also expect to go to PINK BEACH, or maybe they will take you SNORKELING IN KOMODO NATIONAL PARK.
The best time of day to hike this epic spot would be either at sunrise or at sunset. The heat gets absolutely mental in the middle of the day. However, if you are on a day trip, chances are that is when you are going to head to Padar Island. If this is the case don’t worry, it really isn’t that bad of a hike. Depending on your physical ability you can expect about a 15-minute hike.
There are steps that lead up the path and they were in process of adding more stairs. I really wish they hadn’t but oh well. It makes it more accessible for everyone, which I guess is cool too. I would still recommend wearing runners, but I think you would be alright in slippers.
If you are heading to Padar Island on a liveaboard experience, chances are you will be visiting either at sunrise at sunset. Make sure you have a full charge on your phone so you can use the light to illuminate the pathway.
GILI LAWA DARAT vs. PADAR ISLAND
Now I did personally appreciate GILI LAWA DARAT a bit more due to the fact that there were fewer people and more viewpoint options, but this is still a stunning spot. If you are here taking photos you just have to get creative and find new spots to shoot from!
I hope this inspires you to go to Padar Island in Komodo National Park! It truly has some of the most amazing hikes I have ever seen!
